6 Keys to a Happy Vulva… All Summer Long!

Well, well… Summer is indeed upon us! With the tropical heat waves and the invigorating sun beams and the fun-filled vacations, we at Lumira Pelvic Health & Wellness are loving every minute of it!

With the many exciting activities of summer, like swimming, beaching, etc., there are a few things to consider when it comes to vulva skin care – Things that you might not even think about during those cold days of winter!

So, in order to keep your vulva happy all summer long, be sure to keep the following in mind:

Swimming with the Fishes (okay not really)

If you are spending time in the water this summer, be sure to change out of your wet bathing suit shortly after you are done swimming. The same goes, in fact, for any sweaty or wet clothing. Your vulva does not like a damp environment as it can cause bacterial overgrowth and skin breakdown, leading to urinary tract or yeast infections. Not cool.

Fun in the Sun!

Calling all beach-goers… Be sure to use the appropriate sun protection if you plan to hit the beach this summer. UV rays are strong and burns are not fun. Don’t let the skin around your bikini line or vulva be the next victims of sun damage! Instead, protect these areas with a light layer of clothing or a protective block to ensure that all your moments in the rays are safe.

Beat the Heat and Breathe…

During those hot summer nights, it is best to go to bed while wearing a white cotton panty to allow for the vulva to breathe. Better yet, go commando at night if you can – Your vulva will thank you for it!

Summer Lovin’

Ah summer… there are places to go, people to see, and flings to be flung! During the season of vacations and weekend getaways, many people enjoy unique sexual practices and partners. While some may enjoy intercourse in a hot tub, others may prefer a sandy beach. Either way ladies, there are a few things you should keep in mind when it comes to sex and vulva skin care.

First, if you are having intercourse in a hot tub, please note that the vulva will likely collect a fair amount of the hot water, which contains a lot of unhealthy bacteria. Be sure to limit your time in a hot tub or avoid them completely; especially if prone to urinary tract infections.

Second, if you are ‘getting busy’ on the beach, be sure to wash the area around the vulva with clean water shortly afterwards. There is no need to use harsh soaps or chemicals to clean the vulva, a gentle rinse is all that is needed to take care of this area.

Last, no matter what your venue, be sure to void your bladder immediately after intercourse. This will help flush away any bacteria that may have been stirred up around the vulva and prevent an unpleasant infection… This goes for all women, of all ages, of all time, ever.

Bikini Ready?

If you are ‘manicuring’ your bikini line this summer (i.e., with shaving or waxing), be sure to keep an eye out for skin irritation and breakdown. Razor burn and in-grown hairs are super annoying, painful, and do not have to become a part of your summer. You can use natural products, such as organic coconut oil, organic Lavender essential oils, or Aloe Vera to help control redness and irritation. Avoid using creams or lotions directly on the vulva, especially ones that contain sodium lauryl sulphates, xenoestrogens, or other harmful agents that can irritate skin.

‘Aunt Flow’ on the Go…

I know, I know, it’s so annoying that your menstrual cycle comes every month; summer months included. It is especially aggravating when ‘Aunt Flow’ shows up right as you are about to leave for vacation… ugh! As many of us know, there are certain outfits and activities where a pad just won’t do. So, be sure that when using tampons, follow the directions on the package and don’t wear them for too long. Better yet, try opting for a healthier option such as an all-organic, cotton tampon or the Diva Cup!
