What is it?

Vaginismus is a condition whereby the muscles of the vaginal wall go into spasm and greatly reduce the size of the vaginal opening.

Symptoms often include:

  • Significant chronic pain during intercourse
  • Inability to experience penetrative intercourse
  • Pain upon insertion of a tampon and/or use of a Diva Cup
  • Pain upon use of vaginal suppositories

How can Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy help?

Research suggests that Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy should be the first line of defense in gradually stretching the muscles and connective tissues of the vaginal wall. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy can also treat imbalances of the autonomic nervous system which become quite prominent in the presence of vaginismus or other types of chronic pain.

Education about the role of anxiety, stress, and sexual intimacy can also be helpful in addressing the underlying causes of vaginismus.
