Endrometriosis

What is it?

Endometriosis is a complex condition that refers to the abnormal growth of uterine tissue in areas of the pelvic cavity where this tissue does not belong. This growth can then lead to the formation of cysts, lesions, and nodules, which then become painful and disruptive to health.

Symptoms vary for each individual, some may experience no symptoms at all, while others may initially experience:

  • Significantly heavy menstrual flows
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Infertility or difficulties getting pregnant
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Pelvic pain during exercise

Endometriosis is the third most common gynecological disorder that requires hospitalization and is the leading cause of hysterectomies. Severe cramping can be debilitating and leave patients unable to get out of bed and sometimes experience pain during bowel movements. Diagnosis of endometriosis can be difficult as laparoscopic surgery is considered the most accurate way to confirm the presence of abnormal uterine tissue growth.

How can Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy help?

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy can help manage muscle and connective tissue tightness that occurs in the presence of endometriosis. It is also recommended that patients seek advice regarding hormonal regulation, diet and lifestyle habits, fertility promotion, and anxiety/stress management.
