Physiotherapy

1. What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a primary healthcare profession that plays a large role in health optimization, injury prevention, and functional rehabilitation. Physiotherapists combine their detailed knowledge of the body with hands-on clinical techniques to assess and treat injury and dysfunction. In addition to restoring movement and peak performance skills, Registered Physiotherapists also provide in-depth education and advice for health promotion and overall well-being.

Each treatment program is tailored to suit your specific needs and goals so that you get the most out of your Physiotherapy sessions.

2. What kinds of injuries does Physiotherapy treat?

Physiotherapy can treat any injury related to the muscles, joints, and/or bones of the body. Some of the most common injuries include, but are not limited to:

  • ACL sprain / tear / reconstruction
  • Acute concussion
  • Adhesive Capsulitis (“Frozen Shoulder”)
  • Ankle sprain / surgical repair
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Concussion
  • Fracture
  • Hip pain / SI joint pain
  • Knee sprain / strain
  • Lateral and Medial Epicondylitis (“Tennis Elbow” and “Golfer’s Elbow”)
  • Low back pain / disc pain / sciatica
  • Meniscus injury
  • Neck pain / stiffness / headaches
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Post-Concussion Syndrome
  • Pre / post-operative rehabilitation
  • Rotator cuff strain / tear / surgical repair
  • Running-related injuries / Runner’s Knee
  • Shoulder pain / dislocation / subluxation
  • Sport-related injuries
  • Total Joint Replacement

3. Does my insurance cover Physiotherapy?

Yes, if you have Physiotherapy coverage as part of your extended health benefits, your insurance company will cover treatments provided by a Registered Physiotherapist.

4. Do I need a doctor’s referral?

You do not require a referral from your doctor to receive Physiotherapy, however, be sure to check with your insurance company because they may require a doctor’s referral before allowing you to submit receipts.

5. What can I expect during during my initial visit?

An initial assessment or examination will include a detailed discussion of your health history followed by an objective evaluation of your area of concern. During the objective evaluation, you may be asked to perform certain movements or activities, as well as, participate in a few special tests.

After the assessment, your Physiotherapist will develop a list of goals related to your concern. A plan is then created to help address your concerns and achieve your goals – you will have plenty of input in the treatment planning process!

6. What should I wear to my Physiotherapy session?

It is best to wear comfortable clothes in which you feel free to move. Loose-fitting clothing may be best when exposing your area of concern.

7. How long will each treatment session last?

Your initial visit will be approximately 1 hour long and will include both assessment and treatment. Follow-up sessions may be 30, 45, or 60 minutes long depending on your specific needs and the recommendations of your Physiotherapist.

8. How many visits will I need overall?

This is highly variable as different people respond to treatments at different rates. At your first visit, your Physiotherapist will provide a rough estimate of your treatment duration and frequency, which will likely be modified as you go along.

9. Who can benefit from Physiotherapy?

Anyone of any age and gender may benefit from Physiotherapy – especially those looking to recover from an injury and/or begin a new exercise regime and prevent injury onset.
